DECEMBER 13, 2013 MOVIES

Interesting list of movies this week (see here for full list)

Christmas is just around the corner and this week Tyler Perry presents us with an early Christmas gift with his holiday comedy movie in A Madea Christmas. You know it will be fun, Madea lovers will know that. I’m not exactly a fan of Madea but, hey! I know that character is interestingly witty and fun. Watching Madea, the Pistol-packing grandma, as Wikipedia describes her in the movie synopsis is going to be a treat to usher a person into the jolly holiday mood here already.

Saving Banks is a biography movie that centers on the life of the author of Mary Poppins, Pamela "P.L." Travers, her childhood, how she met Walt Disney, negotiations and subsequent making of the movie based on the book, Mary Poppins.

Hurray! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is here. The Desolation of Smaug continues the events of An Unexpected Journey where Bilbo, the hobbit travels with the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin into the Kingdom of Erebor, taking them through Mirkwood, Esgaroth, and Dale to combat with the dragon Smaug.

When a movie plot revolves around a criminal and a federal agent working together, something good is almost certain to be beheld and I’m certainly hoping to behold something extra good (AWESOME, to be precise) in American Hustle. This movie revolves around a brilliant con man with his seductive british partner who are forced to work a wild FBI agent who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia (I smell something cool in the air). That said, I’ll take a brief moment to admire the cast of this movie: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence. You should see why I am so hyped-up about this movie.

Then there’s Hours. Save for the fact that this movie has a great, touching storyline that might bring tears to my eyes, it also has Paul Walker in it staring as a father who must battle alone to save his newborn daughter in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I think I’m going to get really emotional watching this movie. It’s one of the last movies Paul Walker starred in before his unfortunate death (which still feels like a dream to me). It gets released to theaters this Friday and I’m sure there might be only a few dry-eyed persons in the theater room by the time this movie ends. (Rest in Peace, Paul)

Top on my personal ranking for this week is Hours followed by American Hustle. Friday will soon be here though and we’ll see exactly what this week brings us. Have a great week ahead!
